Top Subjects Students Are Booking Right Now (And Why)

Booking trends on TutorHub tell a story about where students see the biggest leverage. Here is what is moving — and what it means for your year.

Top Subjects Students Are Booking Right Now (And Why)

What students are paying tutors for is one of the most honest signals about where the real bottlenecks sit. We looked at the most-booked subjects on TutorHub over the last quarter and the patterns are surprisingly consistent across age groups.

1. Mathematics — by a wide margin

Mathematics remains the single most-booked subject, and within it, three sub-areas dominate:

  • Algebra fundamentals (everywhere from Year 9 to first-year university).
  • Calculus, especially in the run-up to A-levels and university entrance.
  • Statistics — driven by data-heavy university courses across non-STEM fields.

The recurring story: students who never quite understood algebra at 13 are still paying for it at 18. Browse our maths tutors if any of those rings true.

2. English — speaking and writing, not grammar

Demand has shifted. Five years ago, students wanted grammar drills. Now they want conversational fluency, essay structure, and personal-statement coaching.

The driver: AI tools have made surface-level writing trivial. The skills that still need a human are the ones AI cannot do — voice, argument, judgement. Tutors who teach those are booked solid.

3. Programming — Python and web development lead

Coding is now the third most-booked subject across all age groups, not just university students. Two clusters of demand:

  • Python — schools adding it to syllabi; adults learning it for data work.
  • Web development — teenagers who want to build their own projects, plus career-switchers.

4. Sciences — physics over chemistry

Physics tutoring demand consistently outpaces chemistry, even though both appear similarly in school syllabi. The reason: physics teaching depends heavily on visual intuition, which is hard to learn from textbooks alone. Chemistry rewards memorisation, which is easier to self-study.

5. Languages — Spanish, French, and Mandarin lead

Conversational practice is what students book for. Pure grammar lessons are largely obsolete because apps cover that floor cheaply. The premium is on a human conversation partner who can correct you in real time.

What this tells you about your own study

Three patterns worth absorbing:

  • If you are weak in maths, you are not behind — you are with the majority. Get unblocked early.
  • For English, build skills AI cannot replicate: voice, argument, structure.
  • For languages, replace one hour of app drills with one hour of live conversation — every week.

The takeaway

Booking patterns expose the gaps where students themselves admit they need help. Explore subjects on TutorHub or browse tutors in any of the areas above. The best time to fix the gap was three years ago. The second-best time is this week.
