The Last 48 Hours Before an Exam: What Top Scorers Actually Do

The students who score highest do less, not more, in the final 48 hours. Here is the protocol that protects your score.

The Last 48 Hours Before an Exam: What Top Scorers Actually Do

Ask any tutor what separates students who underperform from students who hit their predicted grade — it is almost never knowledge. It is what they did in the final 48 hours. Most underperformers panic-cram. Most over-performers protect.

T-48 hours — the last real study day

This is your final productive study day. Use it for two things only:

  • One full past paper, timed, marked honestly.
  • Targeted repair on your three weakest topics — no more.

Do not start anything new. New material at this stage replaces stable knowledge with shaky knowledge. Net loss.

T-24 hours — light contact only

Thirty minutes of "skim the formula sheet" or "review the flashcard mistakes from yesterday". That is it. Anything more is anxiety pretending to be productivity.

  • Pack your bag in the afternoon — pens, calculator, ID, water.
  • Plan your route. Add 20% buffer time.
  • Eat a real dinner. Stop screens by 9pm.
  • Bed by 10pm. The sleep tonight matters most — not last night.

Exam morning — the script

Decisions consume mental energy. On exam morning, you want zero novel decisions. Pre-decide:

  • What you eat (something you have eaten 50 times before).
  • What you wear (layered, in case the room is cold).
  • When you leave (15 minutes earlier than you think).

Do not look at notes on the way to the venue. Listen to music or sit quietly. Last-minute reading triggers the "I do not know this!" spiral.

In the exam hall

  • Read every question on the paper before you write a single word. Yes, every one.
  • Start with the easiest question, not question 1. Easy wins build momentum.
  • If you stall on a question for more than 90 seconds — flag it, move on, return.
  • Always check time at the halfway point. Always.

The 5-minute "panic protocol"

Mid-exam blank? Pencil down. Box breathing for one cycle. Re-read the question slowly. Underline the verb (calculate, explain, compare). 80% of mid-exam blanks resolve in under 60 seconds.

The takeaway

The final 48 hours is about protection, not acquisition. Top scorers do less, sleep more, and walk in with a script. Steal theirs.
